4,4'-Diethynylbiphenyl is a functional molecule that has been synthesized by the reaction of cobaltacyclopentadiene and anthracene. It is a monomer that can be used as a bidentate ligand in organometallic chemistry. 4,4'-Diethynylbiphenyl is used to prepare uv-sensitive polymers and light-emitting diodes. The light emission produced by this molecule is due to electronic interaction between the electrons in the organic compound and the ultraviolet radiation. 4,4'-Diethynylbiphenyl emits light with two peaks at 350 nm and 380 nm, corresponding to an energy of 1.0 eV and 2.1 eV respectively. This chemical reaction occurs through an electron transfer mechanism where one electron from the excited state of anthracene is transferred to cobalt(II).
