Eucannabinolide is a sesquiterpene lactone with a psoralen skeleton. It is a synthetic compound that was first isolated from the plant Psoralea corylifolia and has been used as an ultraviolet absorber in sunscreens. Eucannabinolide also exhibits strong anti-leishmanial activity, inhibiting the growth of Leishmania infantum and L. major at concentrations of 0.5 µg/mL to 1 µg/mL. In vivo studies have shown that eucannabinolide inhibits the proliferation of human skin cancer cells, but does not show any cytotoxic effects on normal human skin cells. The compound has also been shown to induce apoptosis in leishmanial cells by activating signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Eucannabinolide is soluble in dichloromethane, which makes it suitable for organic solvent extraction from plants.
