5-Carboxymethyl-2-thiouridine is a modified form of uridine that has been synthesized by the reaction of 5-carboxymethyluracil with thiourea. It is used in chemical biology to study protein synthesis and to analyze the structural changes that occur during this process. 5-Carboxymethyl-2-thiouridine has also been shown to be effective as a viral RNA polymerase inhibitor, preventing the synthesis of viral proteins and thus reducing viral replication. This drug is also used in chromatographic methods for separating amino acids, peptides, and proteins.
