- (±)-Carbovir
Carbovir is a nucleoside analogue that is used to treat viral infections. It inhibits replication of viruses in the body by competitively inhibiting their DNA polymerase enzyme. Carbovir can be administered intravenously or orally, and it has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV in patients with AIDS. The discovery group of Carbovir was able to show that this drug could be used to treat other types of viral infections such as hepatitis B and herpes simplex virus type 1. This drug also inhibits creatine kinase activity and has been shown to have an effect on hematopoietic cells, which are cells that produce blood cells.
