Coenzyme A is a substance found in the mitochondria that plays an important role in energy metabolism. Coenzyme A hydrate (CAH) is a mitochondrial enzyme form that participates in the synthesis of acetyl-CoA, which is an important intermediate for fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. CAH has been shown to have enzyme activities on human serum and cytosolic Ca2+. Studies have shown that CAH can also regulate gene expression by binding to the response element of the promoter region of genes encoding proteins that are involved in inflammatory responses. CAH may be used as a therapeutic target for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
