Paspalinine is a chemical compound belonging to the group of diterpenes. It is an endophyte that has been found in perennial ryegrass and other plants. Paspalinine displays neuroprotective activity in vitro and in vivo, inhibiting the binding of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors to their ligands. The biological properties of paspalinine are not well known, but it has shown a profile that includes both GABA receptor binding and neuroprotective effects. Paspalinine is chiral, so it can exist as either (+)-paspalinine or (-)-paspalinine. (+)-Paspalinine has been shown to be more active than (-)-paspalinine at inhibiting GABA receptors.
