Aliconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of the fungal cell membrane. Aliconazole has been shown to be effective against a wide range of yeasts and filamentous fungi in vitro. In vivo studies have demonstrated that this drug can be used for treating superficial mycoses and onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. Aliconazole has also been shown to be effective against Candida albicans and other yeast species in animal models of systemic candidiasis. Aliconazole is not active against Aspergillus species or bacterial infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, or Legionella pneumophila.
