1-(2'-Deoxy-2'-fluoro-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-ethyluracil (EFdA) is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the synthesis of DNA by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase. EFdA is used in the treatment of subcutaneous tumors, hepatitis, and various other diseases. EFdA has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial functions in cultured human cells. The drug has been shown to be more effective at inhibiting tumor growth when given at a lower dose than at a higher dose, which may be due to the inhibition of antibody response. EFdA also has diagnostic applications as it can be detected with antibodies from patients who have been treated with this drug.
