2',3'-Dideoxy-5-iodouridine (5DIU) is an antiviral agent that inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This drug is a labile molecule, which means it breaks down easily in water or other solvents. 5DIU has been shown to be effective against human immunodeficiency virus and herpes simplex virus type 1. The antiviral activity of 5DIU is believed to be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of viral DNA and its cytosolic location in cells.
