2',3'-Dideoxy-5-methylcytidine is a nucleoside analog, which is a substance that inhibits the synthesis of DNA or RNA. It is used in the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and has shown to be effective against cervical cancer cells. 2',3'-Dideoxy-5-methylcytidine is an antiviral drug that inhibits reverse transcriptase by blocking the binding of its substrate, deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates, to the enzyme. This prevents DNA synthesis and replication and causes cell death. 2',3'-Dideoxy-5-methylcytidine has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against several viruses including HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1). The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
