It is synthesized by the reaction of 5'-O-dimethoxytritylthymidine with 2,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidinone. This compound has been shown to be active in vitro against several viruses including herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV1). The antiviral activity of 5'-O-DMT-N2-isobutyrylguanine is due to inhibition of viral DNA polymerase and/or virion assembly. It also inhibits tumor cell growth in vitro.
