It has been used for the treatment of AIDS, but it is not yet approved for this use. 3,5-ddA inhibits the conversion of dATP to dTTP and prevents DNA synthesis by blocking the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. The drug can be synthesized with high efficiency by using a modified nucleoside amidite approach.
