1-(2-Deoxy-2-fluoro-b-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-methyluracil (FMAU) is a biochemical that is used as a radiotracer. It has been shown to be a precursor of creatine, which can be detected by measuring the level of serum creatine kinase. FMAU has also been used in positron emission tomography (PET) scans and neuropathological studies, where it binds to the response element on the DNA strand. This binding leads to increased levels of RNA synthesis and protein production, and can be detected with PET imaging. FMAU has also been used to study cancer in humans and animals, as well as the response of human muscle cells to exercise.
