Catechin hydrate is a methyltransferase inhibitor that inhibits the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase, which is involved in the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous catechols. Catechin hydrate has been shown to be an effective antidiabetic agent, inhibiting the absorption of glucose by the intestine and decreasing the blood glucose level. It also inhibits bacterial growth by reducing water permeability and increasing urinary tract infections. Catechin hydrate is also known to have a protective effect on congestive heart disease. The basic structure of this drug consists of a p-hydroxybenzoic acid group with a methyl group attached to it. This compound is soluble in water and can be used as an additive or as a reaction solution for other drugs. In order to prepare this drug for use in experiments, it must first be separated from its matrix components using surface methodology such as gas chromatography.
