It serves as an antiviral and anticancer agent by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase and tumor cell proliferation. This drug has been shown to be effective in animal models of cancer. 1,N6-Ethenoadenosine-5'-monophosphate sodium salt also inhibits the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is needed for deoxyribonucleotide synthesis. 1,N6-Ethenoadenosine-5'-monophosphate sodium salt is chemically related to adenosine monophosphate (AMP). However, it is not active against AMP phosphohydrolases that are found in bacteria and some protozoa.
