Benastatin A is a synthetic compound with antibiotic and antiviral properties. It is an inhibitor of the synthesis of protein in the ribosome, which is a complex of ribosomal RNA and ribosomal proteins that catalyzes the formation of amino acids into protein. Benastatin A binds to the active site on the ribosome and prevents peptide bond formation, thus inhibiting bacterial growth. Benastatin A has been shown to inhibit microorganism growth, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The drug has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. It has been studied for its use in chemotherapy treatments for cancer patients.
