Product Information
2-(Hydroxymethyl)indoline is an organic compound with the formula C6H11NO. It is a colorless liquid that smells like ammonia. The compound was first synthesized in 1882 by Emil Fischer and was identified as an α-amino acid, which he called "indoline." 2-(Hydroxymethyl)indoline is used to synthesize other compounds and has been shown to react with nitric acid to form 2-nitrosoindoline. This reagent can be used for the synthesis of stereospecific products, such as 1-hydroxy-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2(1H)-one. Recrystallization of this product from ethanol yields 2-(hydroxymethyl)indoline in high purity.
