Glycinamide ribonucleotide (GAR) is a nucleoside that is structurally similar to the natural nucleosides cytidine and adenosine. GAR has antiviral activity against HIV and HSV-1, and it inhibits the growth of cancer cells in culture. GAR has been shown to have novel anticancer properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis through a diphosphate or monophosphate mechanism. GAR can also be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other nucleosides.
