2',3'-O-Isopropylideneadenosine is a synthetic nucleoside that is used as a hydrogen bond donor. It can be synthesized by the palladium-catalyzed coupling of benzyl alcohols with sodium salts. 2',3'-O-Isopropylideneadenosine has been shown to have antiviral activity against herpesviruses and hepatitis C, but not HIV. This agent has also been found to inhibit the uptake of fluorescein into cells and to inhibit the growth of K562 cells in vitro.
2',3'-O-Isopropylideneadenosine is metabolized intracellularly by borohydride reduction or intramolecular hydrogen transfer, yielding an analog of adenosine with a propargylic group on the 3' carbon atom.
