It is used as a research tool to study energy metabolism and its role in inflammatory bowel disease. 4-(2-(5,5-Dimethylhex-1-inyl)-cyclopropyl)imidazol has been shown to reduce locomotor activity in mice by inhibiting the production of glutaminyl cyclase, which synthesizes this neurotransmitter. This compound also inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells and macrophages, thereby reducing inflammation. 4-(2-(5,5-Dimethylhex-1-inyl)-cyclopropyl)imidazol has been shown to be effective against symptoms associated with nervous system diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
