Cefdinir is a third-generation oral cephalosporin that has been used for the treatment of bacterial rhinosinusitis. It is also used in the diagnosis of tissue infections and has been found to be effective against Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. Cefdinir is a bactericidal antibiotic that binds to penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial cell walls. This binding prevents bacterial cell division and leads to cell death. The drug is not active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Enterococcus faecalis due to its lack of activity against beta-lactamase enzymes. Cefdinir may cause drug interactions with other drugs such as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and warfarin, which are metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
