Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of HIV RNA into DNA. Nevirapine is used as an anti-HIV agent in adults and children who have been exposed to HIV but not yet infected. It is also used to treat or prevent opportunistic infections, such as cytomegalovirus infection, caused by HIV. Nevirapine is administered orally and has been shown to be effective in reducing the concentration of HIV in the blood plasma and lymphocytes. This drug interacts with other drugs by inhibiting their metabolism via cytochrome P450 enzymes and can lead to adverse effects such as toxic epidermal necrolysis. Nevirapine concentrations are measured using chromatography with potassium tert-butoxide, which causes a decrease in the peak height of the analyte during the analysis.
