Methylation of 4-O-acetyl-3,6-di-O-(3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-1,2-ethylidene bDmannopyranosyl)-1,2-ethylidene bDmannopyranose with methyl iodide and potassium carbonate in the presence of sodium hydroxide leads to the formation of 4-O-acetyl 3,6 di O-(3,4,6 tri O acetyl 1 , 2 ethylene b D mannopyranosyl)-1 , 2 ethylene b D mannopyranose. This compound is a polysaccharide that is similar to cellulose. It is used in the synthesis of complex carbohydrates.
