Aescin is a purified extract from horse chestnut seeds that has been shown to have clinical relevance in the treatment of various conditions. It is a potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation and oxidative injury, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase. Aescin also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the treatment of inflammation and pain associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, or cardiovascular disease. Aescin has been found to have a protective effect on cells undergoing ischemia reperfusion injury by inhibiting the transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This prevents the death of cells that are exposed to oxygen deprivation followed by an increase in oxygen levels.
Aescin can also be used as an injection solution for abdominal surgery or glucose injections, where it reduces postoperative complications such as infection or adhesion formation
