Digitoxin is a cardiac glycoside that is naturally present in the leaves of the foxglove plant. It has a number of clinical uses, including treatment of atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Digitoxin can be used to regulate heart rhythm and blood pressure by inhibiting the activity of the sodium potassium ATPase pump. This drug also has potent inducers effects on receptor activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to specific receptors on cells. A digitoxin molecule consists of two sugar molecules (digitoxose) linked together by an ether bond. The sugar moiety is composed of a glucose molecule and a galactose molecule that are linked together by an alpha 1-4 glycosidic bond. Digitoxin is soluble in water and crystalline in form.
