Product Information
- Hydroxyethyl Beta-Cyclodextrin
Beta-cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of six glucose molecules. It is used as a carrier molecule for pharmaceuticals, and to create liposomes. Beta-cyclodextrin binds to drugs that are hydrophobic and are poorly soluble in water. This binding process increases the solubility of the drug in water, which can be used to form liposomes or micelles for oral administration. Beta-cyclodextrin also has been found to bind to markers that are expressed by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics such as methicillin and erythromycin. These markers can be detected using polymer film or polyvinyl chloride containing beta-cyclodextrin as a marker. The sodium salt of beta-cyclodextrin is often used because it has increased stability at acidic pH levels, making it more useful for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria with an acidic environment such as Clostridium perfringens.
