Isoliquiritin apioside is a triterpenoid saponin that has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are different from other glycyrrhizin derivatives. Isoliquiritin apioside is poorly absorbed and eliminated in the gastrointestinal tract, with a half-life of about 3 hours. It has been shown to have anticancer activity against carcinoma cell lines, and inhibits matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity by binding to their protein targets. Isoliquiritin apioside also exhibits immunomodulatory effects, which may be due to its ability to activate toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). This compound is being studied as a possible treatment for chronic cough in patients with respiratory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
