Description:Ruthenium bromide is a catalyst that is used in the chemical industry to synthesize ethylene and other organic compounds. Ruthenium bromide is most commonly used as a cocatalyst for the production of polyethylene. It can be synthesized by hydration of ruthenium chloride or by reacting paraformaldehyde with water and sodium bromate. The transition temperature of ruthenium bromide hydrate (RbBr3·H2O) is about -60°C, which makes it useful in high-temperature reactions. Ruthenium bromide hydrate also catalyzes the conversion of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones when heated with chlorides, iodides, or chloroformates. Ruthenium bromide hydrate has been shown to have high recyclability due to its ionic liquid character.
