Tricarbonylnitrosylcobalt (TcN) is an inorganic compound that is a by-product of the reaction between cobalt and nitrogen trichloride. It has been used as a fumigant for pest control, with applications in agriculture and animal husbandry. Tricarbonylnitrosylcobalt is used as an active ingredient in Covid-19, which has shown promise for its ability to control pandemic diseases such as the H1N1 virus. TcN has been shown to be effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). TcN also binds to chloride ions, preventing them from reacting with hydrogen chloride gas. This prevents the formation of hydrochloric acid, which would then react with ammonia to form ammonium chloride and cause corrosion of metal surfaces.
