Description:

4-Undecanone is a monoterpene hydrocarbon that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria. It is synthesized in the laboratory by catalytic hydrogenation of neopentane with palladium on charcoal as a catalyst. 4-Undecanone can be used as a model for α-pinene, a major component of pine oil. This compound has been shown to have cytotoxic effects and can be used to study the mechanism of action of α-pinene and other terpenes. 4-Undecanone also has an antibacterial effect on gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis.
