It has been shown to induce apoptosis in human cancer cell lines by inhibiting kinase and elastase activities. This compound has also been tested against a variety of tumor cell lines and has demonstrated significant anticancer activity. In Chinese hamster ovary cells, levonorgestrel impurity T was found to arrest the cell cycle at the G1 phase, leading to decreased protein synthesis and ultimately cell death. As an inhibitor of kinases and other enzymes involved in cellular signaling pathways, this compound may have potential as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer.
