Vinyl crotonate is an organic compound that has photochemical properties. It polymerizes in the presence of light, forming polyvinyl crotonate. Vinyl crotonate reacts with hydrogen gas and a hydroxyl group to form vinyl crotonic acid. The redox potential of vinyl crotonate is -1.4 volts, which means it can undergo oxidation-reduction reactions. Vinyl crotonate can also react with fatty acids to form esters, which further react with alcohols to produce ethers and ketones. When heated, vinyl crotonate releases particles of cyclohexane rings and alkanoic acid. The chemical structure of vinyl crotonate is C8H14O2.
