3-Phosphonobenzoic Acid is an inorganic compound that has a structural formula of PHO, which consists of a phenyl group and two acid moieties. It can be synthesized by the reaction of phosphorus pentoxide with benzene. 3-Phosphonobenzoic Acid is stable in polar solvents such as water, alcohols, and ethers. The molecule has a carboxylate group at one end and an amide group at the other end. 3-Phosphonobenzoic Acid has bactericidal properties which are due to its ability to bind to phospholipids on the bacterial cell membrane. This inhibits the production of ATP by bacteria, leading to cell death.
