Wilsonine is a diterpenoid alkaloid that has anticancer activity. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of lung cancer cells and breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Wilsonine also inhibits the proliferation of leukemia cells in vitro. Wilsonine's anticancer activity is due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes. The chemical structure of this alkaloid was determined through chromatography and spectroscopy studies, as well as through biological studies on animals. Clinical trials have been conducted for the use of this molecule as an anticancer agent, with promising results in China.
