It has been shown to react with alkyl halides, acyl halides, and anilines to produce β-chloro ketones, α,β-unsaturated esters, and chloroamidines respectively. The reaction with chloride ions produces 2-chloroethyl chloroacetate. This compound can also be used to cross-couple aromatic rings using palladium catalysts. 2-Chloro-3-iodopropane is a precursor to polyphosphoric acid (PPA), which is used in the production of fertilizers.
