The synthesis of 2-aminopyridine (1) from 2-amino-6-chlorophenol (2) involves an oxidative coupling reaction followed by an iminium formation. This process can be done in one step or in two steps, depending on the type of coupling agent used. The yields of this process are dependent on the reagents used, but can be up to 98% when using potassium permanganate as the coupling agent.
