The thiophene-3-sulfonamide is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. It has been shown to inhibit the calcium ion's entry into cells, leading to a decrease in intracellular calcium ion concentration. The thiophene-3-sulfonamide has also been shown to bind to the endothelin receptor and block its function. The binding of this compound to the endothelin receptor blocks the effects of endothelin on vascular smooth muscle cells, which leads to vasodilation and increased blood flow.
