It inhibits the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to leukotrienes. 4IPI has been shown to inhibit the production of leukotrienes in animals. This compound has also been shown to be an effective inhibitor of benzothiazole and benzoxazole synthesis in vitro.4IPI is used for research purposes and has not been approved for use as a medication in humans.
