MDL 19301 is a high-affinity antagonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, specifically the alpha4beta2 subtype. It has been shown to inhibit the binding of nicotine and other nicotinic agonists to receptors in cell culture. MDL 19301 has also been shown to inhibit the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings in rat ileum, suggesting that it may have therapeutic applications for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
