Regelidine is a sesquiterpene that has been found to have cytotoxic effects against cancer cells. The cytotoxicity of regelidine is attributed to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein by binding to the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. Regelidine also inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in a number of cancer cell lines. It has been shown to have IC50 values of 5-10 μM in a549 cancer cell lines and IC50 values of 10-25 μM for many other cancer cell lines. Regelidine is most similar in structure to taxol, which has been shown to be effective against ovarian cancer cells.
