Elafin is a peptide that belongs to the family of activators. It is a member of the human elafin family that activates neutrophil elastase, which belongs to the group of serine proteases. Elafin has been shown to inhibit the activity of ion channels and receptor-ligand interactions in cell biology studies. Elafin also binds to antibodies and is an inhibitor for protein interactions. Elafin has been shown to be a caspase-3 substrate, but its role in apoptosis is not yet clear.
