Rubrene is a molecule used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as a low-cost, non-toxic alternative to indium tin oxide. Rubrene can be synthesized by heating tetrachloroethane with phenylmagnesium bromide in tetrahydrofuran and has a thermodynamic fluorescence quantum yield of 0.5%. Rubrene emits light upon excitation, which is detected by the diode and converted into electrical signals. The multilayer structure of rubrene allows for efficient transport of charges across the device, which can be seen through its high current density. Rubrene is an important component for OLEDs because it emits light at wavelengths that are not absorbed by the human eye and does not degrade when exposed to oxygen or moisture.
