Gardenine is a natural compound of the iridoid group that is found in fructus Gardeniae, and has been clinically shown to have an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme involved in the synthesis of melanin. It catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to dopa, which is then converted to dopaquinone. Gardenine has been used as a skin conditioner due to its ability to inhibit the production of melanin. This process can be seen by examining the chemical structures of gardenine, which contain a hydroxyl group and fatty acids with phellodendron amurense. Gardenine also contains an iridoid glucoside structure and may have some antioxidant activity due to its high concentration of phenolic compounds.
