• Description: The peptide Des-n-octanoyl-[Ser3]-ghrelin (DOG) is a synthetic analogue of ghrelin, the only known natural ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor. DOG binds to the ghrelin receptor and activates it, thereby stimulating growth hormone release from the anterior pituitary gland. In a rat model, DOG counteracts weight gain caused by high-fat diet. It also increases insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats and acts as an appetite suppressant in non-diabetic rats. As such, this peptide has potential as a therapeutic agent for obesity and diabetes.
