A Human liver-expressed peptide hormone involved in the dual activities of being an iron regulator whilst also displaying anti-microbial activity. Hepcidin regulates iron through binding and inhibiting the iron exporter ferroportin. During infection or inflammation Hepcidin is induced, namely by inflammatory cytokines . As a result iron release from macrophages, hepatocytes, and enterocytes is reduced, and the internalization and degradation of ferroportin occurs. Therefore the availability of circulating iron for use by pathogens is decreased. A negative consquence of this however is a condition known as anemia inflammation which is a consquence of less iron being available for erythropoiesis. As it plays a role in many iron disorders it can be used in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The disulfide bonds of this product have been formed by random oxidation and biological activity can not be guaranteed.
