Liver-Expressed Antimicrobial Peptide 2 (LEAP2) is a peptide that belongs to the family of antimicrobial peptides. LEAP2 is a potent activator of ion channels, which are membrane proteins that regulate the passage of ions through the cell membrane. LEAP2 can also inhibit protein interactions by binding to receptors and ligands on the surface of cells. LEAP2 has been shown to be a receptor for Ligand-gated ion channels, which are involved in many cellular processes such as neurotransmitter release, muscle contraction, and hormone release.
LEAP2 can be used as an inhibitor of the hyperpolarization activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels in neurons. These channels are important for regulating neuronal excitability and inhibiting neuronal activity following action potentials.
