Piperlotine A is a novel, potent, and selective antimycobacterial agent that belongs to the class of aromatic aldehyde. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the β-unsaturated carbonyl group in mycolic acid, which is an essential component of mycobacterial cell walls. Piperlotine A also has anti-inflammatory properties and can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis in vivo. Piperlotine A is synthesized from piperlotine B by reduction with sodium borohydride in refluxing ethanol followed by treatment with methyl iodide.
