It is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase, which is involved in the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids. SSR 240612 also inhibits acetylcholine release by binding to muscarinic receptors, leading to its anti-inflammatory effect. SSR 240612 may also have anticancer activity because it inhibits histone deacetylases and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of malignant brain cells.
