Bergapten is a natural compound found in plants such as Angelica Dahurica. Bergapten has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human leukemia cells HL-60, and it inhibits the energy metabolism by binding to α1-acid glycoprotein. Bergapten also has genotoxic activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis. Bergapten binds to coumarin derivatives, which are present in the cell membrane, and may also bind with matrix proteins. It was identified as a potent anti-inflammatory agent that binds to the protein p38 MAP kinase, leading to activation of JNK/SAPK pathways.
