(-)-Arctigenin, also known as (-)-arbutin and (-)-arbutin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, is a bioactive compound that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. This agent is stereoselective and has shown neuroprotective effects in cultured cells. (-)-Arctigenin also inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. (-)-Arctigenin binds to the cell membrane and interferes with glucose uptake, leading to reduced ATP production for the maintenance of cellular viability. (-)-Arctigenin can be alkylated at its C5 position with butyrolactone to form a synthetic analog with anticancer activity.
